EU Renewable Energy Hits Record High: 47.5% of Electricity Now From Green Sources
The shift toward sustainable power in the European Union reached a major milestone in 2024. According to the latest Eurostat data, renewable energy sources now account for 47.5% of total electricity consumption across the EU. This represents a 2.1 percentage point increase from last year and an incredible nearly three-fold jump since 2004, when the share stood at just 15.9%.
The Mix
Wind and Hydro Lead the Way – Wind and hydropower remain the backbones of the EU’s green grid, together generating nearly two-thirds of all renewable electricity.
- Wind: 38.0%
- Hydro: 26.4%
- Solar: 23.4%
Solar’s Meteoric Rise – While wind is the largest contributor, solar power is officially the fastest-growing renewable source. Its evolution is staggering: from representing only 1% of the mix in 2008 (7.4 TWh), solar production surged to 304 TWh in 2024, underscoring its vital role in Europe’s energy future.
